Most Common Problems and Solutions with Garage Door Openers

Garage door openers are among those modern conveniences that one might hardly ever think of—till they stop operating one day. When your garage door does not respond as it should, it can be both disturbing and vulnerable to your house.

Most Problems Related to an Opener Are Generally Known and Are Easy To Take Care Of

Remote Control Not Working

In case the remote won’t open the door, one of the easiest fixes is to change the remote battery. In case the batteries do not help, check that you are within range and the antenna on the opener is properly aligned. Reprogram the remote, if needed.

Door Reversing Before Closing

In the event that the garage door is closing but reversing immediately, either before touching the floor or just slightly before that, it is probably the sensors that are the problem. Dirty, blocked, or misaligned photo eyes can cause this door to reverse. Cleaning and realigning easily solves this.

Motor Runs but Does Not Open the Door

This is not very common, but it sometimes happens: take a good listen for either noise or smooth gliding of the door opening onto its rails. Common causes: broken chain or belt, worn-out gears inside the opener. It would require a pro to estimate which of these parts to repair or replace for the damaged ones.

Strange Noises While Operating

Grinding, squeaking, or rattling sounds demonstrate worn-out gears, loose hardware, or a lack of lubrication. Tightening bolts and using a garage door lubricant will lessen the noise, but a constant sound could indicate something bigger and thus needs servicing.

Door Opens and Closes Inconsistently

If your door seems to do its own thing, it could be because of faulty wiring, interference with the signal to the opener, or some trouble with the limit switches. These different issues should be investigated by a qualified technician.

Total Opener Failure

If the opener will not respond at all, either in remote or wall switch mode, the next possible culprit is the power source. Check the outlet; check the circuit breaker. If power is not the problem, there may be a need for professional repair or replacement.
